"Education is the cornerstone of freedom. With it, we rise from oppression."

John Riley, born into slavery in Tallahassee, Florida, rose to become one of the most influential African American leaders in the state’s capital. A self-taught scholar, Riley became the first Black person in Tallahassee to own a home in the city’s downtown area and was a leading educator and businessman.
