John Riley, born into slavery in Tallahassee, Florida, rose to become one of the most influential African American leaders in the state’s capital. A self-taught scholar, Riley became the first Black person in Tallahassee to own a home in the city’s downtown area and was a leading educator and businessman. As principal of Lincoln Academy, he helped improve educational opportunities for African American students, deeply impacting the community. His historic home, now the John G. Riley Center & Museum, stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication to education, cultural preservation, and civil rights.
