"I wasn’t afraid because I knew I was fighting for a future free from fear."

Audrey Nell Edwards, born in St. Augustine, Florida, is known for her role as a member of the “St. Augustine Four,” a group of young Black activists who were jailed in 1963 for challenging segregation by staging sit-ins at a local Woolworth's lunch counter. Just 16 years old at the time, Edwards endured 90 days in reform school as punishment for her bravery, a sentence that sparked national outrage and mobilized support from civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Edwards’ courage under pressure became an emblem of the strength of Florida’s youth-led civil rights movement, her legacy an inspiration to those who continue to stand up for justice.
