"I believe in the power of dialogue. Through conversation, we will
find our common humanity."

Born in Tallahassee, Florida, LeRoy Collins served as the state’s 33rd governor and became a critical voice for moderation and racial justice during a time of deep-seated segregation. Elected in 1954, Collins was unique among Southern politicians of his era for his opposition to segregation and his willingness to call for gradual integration. He is remembered for his passionate belief that Florida could only progress by addressing its racial issues and ensuring fair treatment for all its citizens. Collins’ leadership during a pivotal time in Florida’s history left a lasting impact, as he courageously championed civil rights even when it was politically risky.
